WVC Art Show 2012

Boyer Valley students should submit their artworks to Mr. Mallory by Thursday, March 15, for entry into the Western Valley Conference Art Show.

The 2012 WVC Art Show will be hosted at OABCIG on Thursday, March 22. The show will be held in the OABCIG High School gym. The show is open to the public from 12:15-3:00pm. Student workshops will run from 9:30am-12:15pm. Awards will be announced after 1:15pm.

Please let Mr. Mallory know if you'd be interested in attending.

Anyone who is missing any work from Jan 4-13 on Civics can now print out all of the review questions for D. Schwerey's "History of Iowa" article. They weren't all posted on the Wiki before, but they are now.

If you need copies of Prof. Schwerey's article, the article on immigrant entrepreneurs, or the article on Sen. Grimes, please ask me and I'll make new copies for you, because these still aren't posted on the wiki.

Remember, partial credit is better than zeros. You're ALL smart enough to succeed.

The 3 most important things you can do for your grade is 1) do the work, 2) put your name on it and 3) turn it in.

Chapter 2 RE-Test
Not many students earned B's or C's on the Chapter 2 Post-Test, there were mostly either A's or F's. So, I devised a re-test. Students with below 80's on the post-test who earn better on the re-test, will have their two grades averaged together. Students who "aced" the Ch.2 Post will receive extra-credit for their performance on the re-test.

Good morning, thank you for taking my classes today, Annamarie ,age 6, has the flu ):

1st & 2nd Hour (CIVICS)

1) Have students write down the 2nd Paragraph of the Declaration for memory & turn it in ("We hold these truths...")

2) Have students complete the notes-outline for section 4 (see attached, please make copies- just 18 because one of the two sections already have copies)

3) Study quietly for the chapter post-test tomorrow

3rd Hour (DRAWING)

Students should work silently on their drawings of the hallways. (Sorry, this requires you to circulate through the halls supervising them). Those who are finished should stay in the classroom and work on homework from other classes, read, or free-draw in their sketchbooks.

4th Hour (MS Art)

7th graders have study hall with Brad Brunning on Thursdays (Art is only M,W,F) so enjoy a free period.

5th Hour (IND STUD)

Painting student Makayla Carter will be working on a backdrop for the Drill Squad. Photography students only come on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, so you'll probably get to use this as a free period too.

6th Hour (PAINTING)

Please have students read the attached article on the Principles of Design (again, sorry to make you have to run something off- just 12 copies for this class, but use the same article for 7th hour yearbook). Have them take notes on the article and write and turn in 2 quiz questions based on the article. I should have all of their analysis papers except for Johnson- he may continue writing his paper instead of reading the article. There may be one or two others who may print their papers once they've finished the article/notes/quiz-questions.

7th Hour (YEARBOOK)

Please have students read the attached article (same one as for 6th hr painting- just 12 more copies). Have them take notes on the article and write and turn in 2 quiz questions based on the article.

If they finish early, they may write headlines or captions for pictures in the yearbook on yearbookavenue.com in the graphics lab. Christian and Danielle are Editors, they may spend the whole hour working on layouts.

The Bill of Rights Institute is currently hosting an essay contest for high school students.

The contest asks students to write an essay (1000 words max) about the following question,

#10- Take some landscape or townscape pictures using the Rule-of-Thirds. Upload your 3 best to our Flickr group by or before October 4th. Actually, once you think you understand the Rule of Thirds, try taking almost all of your pictures from now on using the rule. Ideally it should become "second-nature" for you, so that you'll do it without even trying. Then, when you do deliberately break the rule, you're work will be even stronger. Click here to look through my 4-H Presentation for examples of how the Rule-of Thirds works, otherwise, be sure to watch the videos on the bottom of this page.

#13- Point-of-View. Take some pictures from unusual angles. Use your Family Tree to find out where your ancestors came from. Mark the cities/states they've lived in on the county, state and national maps. If you can find out from your parents or grandparents, trace where your ancestors immigrated from on the world map too.

Just like on the Family Tree, try to complete it as thoroughly as you can, but don't worry if there are parts which you can't do. Some families may have lived in the same town/are for several generations. Some students may not be able to gather much information about anyone further back than their grandparents. But if you CAN find out more, do.

Things to think about this chapter

To become a U.S. citizen, first you need to become a "permanent-resident," then you can submit a "declaration of intent." After a period of 5 years, you will be tested on English, U.S. History, and Civics and submit an application for citizenship. If after an interview with an examiner, you're approved, you swear a loyalty oath and are declared a citizen.

Half of them need to finish their 16 Square-Grid Value Self-Portraits. The others may do other homework QUIETLY, or they may free-draw- HOWEVER, whatever they draw should use shading and demonstrate that they can use values to make things seem like they are 3D.

Caption Writing Section Postest (will have on the island)

Civics- Current Events Worksheet (I will put it on the desk in the Civics room Friday). Rhonda will leave newspapers. The front half has to do with news in general, the back half has to do with the unit we're studying. If they have trouble, ask them to do the best that they can and to use their Ch.18 notes to help them if they need to. If they can't answer the last question, they may leave it blank. These are due at the end of the class period, please collect them.
Civics-
Drawing & Seeing- Students will h ave begun their first major drawing on Friday which they will continue working on today (Monday) AND tomorrow (Tues 9/20). If they have any questions, they should re-read pp. 105-110 in out book. Another option for some students would be to work on their copies of the St. Jerome drawing on p.82 in our book (this should be done upside-down).
MS Art- DEAR time (silent reading) 11:29-11:49 PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS READ, SILENTLY
Students may make whatever they'd like to in clay today. I suggest animals of figurines, but so long as it's school-appropriate, anything goes. Wednesday we will learn a new construction method and Friday will be our last day with clay.
Clean-up is important. Please have kids put tools and clay away and wash their hands beginning at 12:27 or 12:30
Please make sure the lid is securely on the barrel.
Independent Study- Makayla Carter will work on her latest painting. Katie Cogdill and Ally Kahl may come to work on digital photography in the Yearbook Computer Lab, but probably not since they have Weight Training Mondays.
Painting-
Elsa, Kameren, and Rodolfo (maybe Pat) will finish working on their complementary-color portraits. Everyone else should complete the Art History Worksheet (on the island). Four Important Painting Terms-

Media: vehicle that carries pigment (color), such as linseed oil, acrylic, tempera, or watercolor
Genre: general classification for subject matters, such as landscape, portrait, still-life, etc.
Idiom: The "isms" in Art History, Impressionism, Expressionism. Modernism, Cubism, Surrealism, etc.

How about the self-timer on you camera? Take a series of pictures of yourself, but try to be original and creative and try to express something about yourself.

What IS Memorial Day Anyway?

Monday is Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, Ashes Day, not to be confused with Labor Day, it’s book end on the other side of summer or Veteran’s Day, it’s half-brother which was really intended for the living. Since World War I, it’s also been called Poppy Day, because volunteers sell small, red artificial flowers as a fund-raiser for disabled veterans.

Legend has it that throughout history, after major wars red poppies seem to pop up on battlefields and on soldiers graves. Poppy seeds lay dormant in the soil until it is violently turned or dug up, causing them to sprout.

After WWI in Flanders Field, Belgium. In the bomb craters and on mounds of rubble, poppies bloomed everywhere. The heavily churned earth and high concentration of lime from the limestone buildings made the perfect catalyst for the poppies to grow.

Some thought that the red poppies looked spilled blood. British mothers wore poppies in remembrance of their lost sons. The poppy has since become a symbol of peace and of remembering the sacrifice of the fallen soldier.

Memorial Day may have began in 1868, when Civil War General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans’ organization, said that May 30th should be special day to decorate the graves of Union soldiers.

He may have chose May 30th on the suggestion of a Franco-American veteran, who noted that May 30th was "The Day of Ashes" in France-the day that Napoleon's remains were returned to France in 1840 from his exile to the island of St. Helena 1200 miles off Africa. What Napoleon’s ashes have to do with Union veterans, I have no idea.

Northern states celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday in May. This became a federal holiday in 1971. In the deep South, Memorial Day celebrations honor Confederate soldiers who died in "the war between the states." Mississippi and Alabama celebrate Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday in April. In Florida and Georgia, the date is April 26. May 10 is Memorial Day in North and South Carolina, and the holiday is June 3 in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Tennessee. Texas observes Confederate Heroes Day on January 19 (Robert E. Lee's birthday).

The first large observance was held in 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The cemetery already held the remains of 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. After speeches, children from the Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.

Many Americans don’t know is that how Arlington came to be our national cemetery. Arlington was the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Perhaps to send his family a message, Union sympathizers piled the remains of Confederate dead at his doorstep. You can imagine the stench.

Unfortunately the significance of this holiday is sometimes forgotten, buried in ads, sales, barbecues and water sports. It’s easy to see Memorial Day as just another day off. It certainly has a sweetness as the gateway to summer and a time for friends and families to gather.

But especially with two wars just in the last two years, I think we need to remember it for what it was intended, a day of mourning, and prayer for and gratitude to the men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty and their families.

Buy a poppy to support Veterans’ charities, pray for the widowed and orphaned families of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and thank God for your freedoms.

Hey Photographers- next year we're going to try something pretty ambitious for Yearbook. We're going to try to have a feature photo to chronicle each and every day! The top 2/3 will have group pictures and candids of teams and groups like any other yearbook, but the bottom 1/3 will have a little 5-day calendar with slots for pictures.

There's no way I can pull this off alone. So, make plans on keeping a "photo-journal" every week. This should help us get pages done week by week, and it will help us try to get every hs student in the yearbook 3 times. We can use these pictures on the school website AND for Photography assignments if you're taking that class.

Also: We really want to have Baseball & Softball pictures in the 2011-12 yearbook, so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE try to take some and be sure to email them to me as soon as you do! Othber shots you might want to try for that we can use in yearbook and Photo class (maybe even website) are 4th of July in Dunlap or Dow City, 4H and the 4 County Fair, again, email them to me or upload them to Flickr as soon as you get them and we'll go from there. THANKS!!!

Independent Study (IND) Digital Photography- Madison McDunough may work on compiling and printing her portfolio, commenting on classmate's photos on Flickr, or take the Chapt. 9 quiz online.

IND Ceramics- Rosario Nelson may finish-up her last few works, or she may go practice music with Mr. Jordan for commencement Sunday.
Ceramics- Seniors may help clean the classroom, their lockers, or sign out. Underclassmen can glaze, finish working on their final 5 projects, or help clean the classroom- especially sinks, potter's wheels, and kiln room door.
CLEAN-UP is very important, they should start at 10:57. The lid must be back on the barrel. Works in progress should be covered with plastic and in the "greenhouse" (metal cabinet in the kiln room).
Please close the doors to the greenhouse when they leave.

But- if you want some extra credit, I encourage you to retouch at least one picture and create at least one composite (like on pp172-173). Composites can be wicked-fun and totally surreal. FYI any adjustment or composite pictures required in this year's portfolio list are just optional- but, again, if you want to take a stab at or or are already acquainted with image editing, I'll sure give you some extra credit for any that you do decide to do.

Last 6 wks of Photography

As I think I've mentioned to all 3 of you, we only have chapters 7, 8, and 9 left. I could try to cover one chapter every 2 weeks, but Lucas and Makayla are behind and all 3 of you have to get the portfolio done (http://digphoto.wikispaces.com/Portfolios). Please note that it would be best to have real prints- second best is printed on computer, but either way you can't just post them to Flickr, although you should do that too. This is why I told you about the portfolio at the beginning of the class and why I'm reminding you with more than a month to go.

Consequently, I was leaning on just having you deal with chapter 9- but then this morning I got to looking at chapters 7&8 and realized just how much they influence chapter 9. Ugh! Anyway (be patient with me) I think that I will give you a truncated version of 7&8 like I just did for chapters 3,4,5&6 but have most of the shooting assignments pretty much be from chapter 9.

BTW, most if not all of these can end up in your portfolio- almost all of the portfolio assignments are pictures that you've either already taken as shooting assignments or will for this last unit (no need to freak out about having to take all new ones).

I should have that to you later today, although I'm sure you won't care if you don't get it till the Tuesday after Easter. I will also do my best to get you a review sheet for the final by the end of next week.

We need girls who'll get along together, make it fun for each other and for the crowd, stick with it and show up. We need girls with school spirit who will represent Boyer Valley well and inspire pride and participation.

I've been encouraged to recruit girls who will cheer frequently and loudly and (I'll be frank with you) girls who the student body will respond favorably to and follow, rather than just accepting kids who may be more on the social fringe. I want to be careful not to be discriminatory, but I do want to build a program that will be positive and build school spirit and pride.

If you don't come out for Cheer, then the only people I'll have to choose from are the handful of people who've already filled this form out. I think they'll be good cheerleaders, but if you think more people, or different people should go out for cheer, then you need to come out and encourage others to come out with you.

I'm tired of having only 5 people come out and then having one or two or three of them drop out. I'd much rather have 12-20 people tryout, choose the best 6 or 8 and keeping those 6 or 8 all season.

IND Ceramics- Rosario Nelson is ahead in Ceramics, so she will go to Mr. Jordan's room to work on music.
Ceramics- Students should continue working on their clay figures.
CLEAN-UP is very important, they should start at 10:57. The lid must be back on the barrel. Works in progress should be covered with plastic and in the "greenhouse" (metal cabinet in the kiln room). Please close the doors to the greenhouse when they leave.
MS Art- DEAR time (silent reading) 11:29-11:49
Students may take about a baseball's worth of clay to make whatever they'd like. They should put them in the large cardboard box on the island when they're done. This should be something that they only get today to create, because they will have a different clay assignment on Friday. The only guideline is that it can't be thicker than their thumb if they want it to survive the kiln. Again, clean-up is important, students should start putting things away at 12:25. The lid must be on the barrel and the barrel should be rolled back into the kiln room. Please also make sure that the greenhouse doors are closed.

The semester if flying by. Between the DC trip and the formal writing project, I've given you a lot of time off. I't time to get back to learning. Because we're using digital cameras, there are about 3 chapters that we could easily skip, but chapters 3-6 (pp.55-129) contain a lot of information that's pretty important, both for taking better pictures, and for understanding how to edit and process pictures in software like Picnik, Gimp, or Photoshop.

You will analyze the sensory, technical, design, and expressive qualities of a photograph by an influential photographer. You will havequestions from Duke University's visual literacy program as a guide. You can turn your rough drafts in as soon as you're ready, but they are due on Friday, April 8.

It should end up being relatively easy since you basically just have to look at a picture and answer questions. Meanwhile, it will subconsciously be training your eyes and brain to look at things in a different way AND expose you to at least one (if not a few) important photographers throughout history! Have fun and don't freak out about it. Good luck.

Boyer Valley Students recognized at WVC Art Show

The Western Valley Conference (WVC) Art Show was held in Moeville, Iowa Thursday, March 24. Thirteen of the nineteen schools in the conference participated. Each school was permitted to enter as many as fifty artworks. The show was juried by judges from the Sioux City Art Center and Morningside College.

BV Senior Melissa Hanigan received a Judge's choice award for her interpretation of Boccioni, Umberto's 1912 futurist painting, "Elastic." Junior Madison McDonough also received a judge's award for her photograph of Natalie Lapke. Junior Rosario Nelson was honored with a teacher's choice award for her ceramic sculpture of a praying angel.

Other Boyer Valley students who submitted drawings, paintings, photos, and sculptures included Freshmen Katie Cogdill and Chelsey Kermin; Juniors Makayla Carter and William McClure; and Seniors Stephanie Brink, Lucas Neilsen and Nick Sullivan.

Students from Westwood, Ridge View, OA/BCIG, and Whiting won first place for each class level. Senior Dalton Peterson from Woodbine won Best of Show.

Next year the WVC Art Show will be hosted jointly by ArWeVa and OA/BCIG and is expected to be held in Ida Grove on the third Thursday in March. Boyer Valley is slated to host the conference art show in 2013.

Drawing: Formal Writing Assignment

Yes, as a matter of fact, we do have to write a paper for Drawing class- but don't fret, it will be short (only 1-3 pages), it won't require a bunch of research or a lot of sources (it's going to be mostly your own opinions), and I'm providing you with a pre-formated template- complete with questions to guide you through.

First, select a draftsman (that's the technical term for someone who draws) from the list of Important and Influential Draftsmen found at http://drawing-and-seeing.wikispaces.com/Influential+Draftsmen. On the top of the page, there's a link that lets you download the template, open it and save it in your school folder (or click here http://drawing-and-seeing.wikispaces.com/file/view/DrawingFormalWritingAssignment.doc)

Then, select one example of the artist’s work, which you will analyze. Search for images with the artist’s name, please insert the image which you use below the title of your paper.

Use the questions for each paragraph to help you along. Answer as many of them as you can. If there are any which you can’t answer, skip them- but be sure to write at least 3-5 sentences for each paragraph. It will probably be easier for you to work with or without the questions because you're already familiar with the 4 steps in Art Criticism.

I will give you class time next week (Mar 18-21) to work on it. The papers aren't due until Friday, April 1.

CONFERENCE ART SHOW

Any Art students interested in submitting their work to the Western Valley Conference Art Show- please bring your submissions to Mr. Mallory by this Thursday, March 10.

The Western Valley Conference Art Show will be March 24th at the Moville Community Center (815 Main Street, Moville, IA).

Works will be evaluated by judges from the Sioux City Art Center. Awards will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each media and two best of show awards.

They will be offering three workshops for anyone who attends, including a painting workshop and one in clay. Workshops begin at 10:00am.

Soft shell tacos, deserts, and drinks will be available for lunch for $5.

Awards will be handed out beginning at 2:35pm

Wed. is midterm. Mak has responded to 3 of our 5 class discussion questions, and Maddie is working on them now. Makayla, if you have time, it would be great if you would respond to the 2 new ones. This will count as your "class participation grade." Lucas- please spend 5th hour responding to all 5 today.

I will get self-evaluation sheets out to you all for the sports and abstract pictures (UPLOAD LUCAS, UPLOAD!). Girls, I commented on and graded all of your pictures so far. PHOTO: Shooting Assignments

Shooting Assignment 1. | (overdue- upload the 3-5 best to our new Flickr group ASAP!)
Pay particular attention to pages 6-11, then shoot a variety of different pictures this week. Take some pictures with close subjects and some further away, indoors and out, in the shade and in the sun. Shoot a variety of subjects, portrait, landscape, and action scenes. Page 9 will have some ideas. Take at least 5-10 pictures. In some ways these pictures will serve as another pre-test, to gauge your skill levels.

Shooting Assignment 2. Due. Monday. Jan 25 (upload to your new Flikr stream, then add the best 2-3 to our Class Flickr Group)
WHO ARE YOU? You are the cheapest model you'll ever hire! Everybody's always taking pictures of themselves on facebook. Can you do it without having your arm in the picture? Could you use a mirror? How about the self-timer on you camera? Take a series of pictures of yourself, but try to be original and creative and try to express something about yourself. Take between 5 and 20, delete the worst ones, upload the best 3-10 to your new Flickr stream and then take the best 2-3 and add them to our Class Group- I already have mine there (you can see them at http://www.flickr.com/groups/bvdigphoto ).

Take some pictures of winter! Snow, ice, radiators- whatever you think of as representing January. I took all of mine outside (you can see them at http://www.flickr.com/groups/bvdigphoto ). Maddie had a great one a couple of weeks ago that she shared with me on facebook.

Next week I will have Picture Self-Evaluation Rubrics on the wiki and will have you fill one out for each of your best shots for each of these 3 assignments. Once you all join the Flickr group, you'll be able to leave comments on each other's work too. Remember to Click here to take the Camera Parts Quiz online and be studying pp. 20-27 in the book. Next week's quiz will be a lot tougher than either of the 2 quizzes this week. You may want to use the practice quizzes on the online textbook's website- go to chapter one, and then to "multiple choice." What you want to study is using aperture and shutter speed together to control exposure. This is the most technical/scientific part of photography. After this we'll focus more on composition and expression.
