Panning

Panning is a technique that can produce amazing results (if you perfect it…. or get lucky) but is also one that can take a lot of practice to get right.

The basic idea behind panning as a technique is that you pan your camera along in time with the moving subject and end up getting a relatively sharp subject but a blurred background.

Senior Pictures

Mr. Mallory still needs senior pictures for the yearbook from the following students:

Andrew Barksdale, Kayla Donscheski, Seth Elder, Derek “Omar” Erlemeier, Michael Ferguson, Brett Gliem, Nathan Head, Dillion Klein, Jacob Klein, Christopher Malone, Whiney McAllister, Mark Mefferd, Emily Melby, Ashley Reisinger, Chris Reisz, Alisha Steele, James Sullivan, Daniel Swertzic, Chase Thoreson, and Jamie Weverka.

If you do not think that you will be able to get a senior picture in by the end of February, please see Mr. Mallory about setting up an appointment to take your picture for the yearbook. If your name appears on this list, but you have already given a picture to either Mrs. Hanigan or Mrs. Staley, please ask them to be sure that Mr. Mallory is able to scan a copy of the picture you gave them. Thank you.

Jeremy from the Creative Center

http://www.thecreativecenter.com

This is the website of the Creative Center in Omaha
whose representative came to talk to Painting and Yearbook classes today. Sorry you missed him, Photography. They're a 2 year Technical College that specializes in Commercial Illustration and Graphic Design.

Color Theory

Your finished water color grids should look something like this.

Introducing... Photoshop

Reading: Please read page 3 and pages 9-15 in your textbooks by Friday. We'll take a closer look at some of it together in class this week, but first-

Lab Work: By Friday, make sure you've taken, downloaded, and printed a contact sheet of your 10-12 portrait-profile-3/4 view pictures and turned the contact sheet in to Mr. Mallory with your name on it.

Wednesday/Thursday-
  • Find "\\Server1\photography" on Network Places on a computer. transfer your pictures from the "my pictures" folder on the computer, or your student folder on the server to this one.
  • Right-click to re-name the pictures in your sub-folder with your initials; For example, in stead of "spotty," I'd call it "TMspotty."
  • Edit each of these pictures in Photoshop- make sure you make each of the following corrections:
  1. Levels, (lighten Kensie)
  2. healing brush tool, (Give Justin a smooth, clean complexion with no freckles or zits),
  3. blur tool,
  4. red eye tool, (do you see Kensie, Kaytlin, and Sasha's the problem?)
  5. and cropping (you choose how)

Here are some exciting sites

http://stunningnikon.com/challenge
Sure, it's pretty much an advertisement for Nikon cameras, but they challenged some pros and those pros really delivered.

http://www.aapi.smugmug.com
These are pictures by a recent Popular Photography magazine reader contest- look for the green sea turtle, it's amazing. FYI- smugmug.com is another website for storing, showing and selling your photos, you might like to open an account with them.

http://www.deannefitzmaurice.com
Deanne Fitzmaurice is a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist. Some of the pictures in her photo essay about Selah, a 9 year old boy who was injured in Iraq by shrapnel are disturbing, but very compelling.

Sports Photojournalism

Nobody ever covers the middle school kids, so here's one from the 7th grade girls' game against COU the other night. Note, faces, action, ball in the shot, AND the triangle composition.

Pictures of the week

Here are two links to "Pictures of the Week" sites:

Time-Warner/AOL/CNN pictures of the week

MSNBC's The Week in Pictures

English teachers often tell students that good readers make good writers. One great way to train your eye and brain to better capture good pictures is to study good photojournalism- so come back to these sites often to see what the best photographers are doing and you're bound to become a better photographer yourself!

Terms to expect on Jan 18 quiz

Band Tee Shirt

Here are the designs for the front and back of the band tee shirt that I did. That's our own illustrious director Trenton Stump on the turn tables, AKA: "DJ Sharp-er-Flat" -whatever THAT means. If you're interested in ordering one, talk to Christine Harriott or Kasi Hammer.

Some Photo Links

Hey there shutterbugs,

Thought I'd pass a few links on to you real quick.

One is http://malloryart.blogspot.com
If you want to see MY pictures (like this one of Jake).

Another is actually one YOU can submit to.
Have you noticed our "Picture of the Week" on the school website?
http://www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us
If you have a great picture that you think should be on the school website, or in the yearbook, go ahead and email it to me at
malloryt@boyer-valley.k12.ia.us
or ted.mallory@gmail.com

You'd better do it too, because by actually putting my email addresses on this website, I just guaranteed myself a bunch more spam. So make it worth it.

And one last one, this is a lot of fun. Have you ever seen Jones Soda in the grocery store? Ever had one? I'm not here to advertise them, but they do something really cool- they publish amateur photography on their labels. To take a look at some of the best ones, and to send them your pictures if you want to, just visit http://www.jonessoda.com/gallery

Have a great week.

Photo- your first VOCAB!

JPEG- leading digital image format, good for web, emails, and small prints. Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEGs are compressed and therefore their quality can degrade over time.

TIFF- Tagged Image File Format, much larger file, not as good for email or web browsers- but provides optimum picture quality.

Camera Raw- developed for photo purists, un-doctored by camera factory settings. Completely uncompressed, large files.

As far as composition goes, you may skim over things I post for Yearbook and Painting.
