DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY!


Holy Guacamole! You weren't kidding when you complained about how difficult that quiz was. I'm not sure i should bother entering the scores under 25%. I am thinking (don't count on it, I'm just thinking at this point) about spending some more time reviewing with you and giving you a paper re-test.

Remember, the emphasis is on Shutter Speed & Aperture, so study over what each does and how to get them to work together.

Remember to include your name and email address, but an ID # is not necessary. If you are disappointed with your results (it is a toughie) you may study more and re-take it once, but you may not just keep taking it until you get the results you want (yes, I'll know  Kelsi uh, er, I mean whoever might be thinking of trying that). ALSO- very FUNNY, whoever entered their name as "Sister Wendy!"

REMINDER: You can and probably should go ahead and start working on shooting assignments for your portfolio already, however, if you upload them to your flickr photostream already, please wait to add them to our class pool until we're covering that specific assignment, don't add everything you upload to the pool as soon as you upload it. Mallory Sub Lessons Mon Jan 21

So last Friday, I took my daughter to the doctor, but today I really need to. I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. Thank you for taking my classes for me today.

1. & 2. CIVICS- Have students read/complete the attached article about when Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize and turn in by end of the class period. 

3. Photography- Students should complete the attached Self-Critique form on their recent self-portrait assignment. Since only 4 students have done so already, most students should use the time to download pictures from their cameras and upload them to flickr, add their assigned pictures to the class group "pool." A few people may need to use the time to register for flickr. Students should read pp. 20-27 and be prepared for a quiz over it on Thursday. 

4. Planning  Period- Please have my teaching assistant, Emily Anderson score the Ceramics and Yearbook quizzes. Her name is on a post-it note on them on the island. Have her put them in the yellow box when she's finished.

5. 7th Grade Art- Have students complete the attached 2-page worksheet on complementary colors- they may use whatever media they'd prefer; marker, colored pencil, crayon, or oil pastel. Please be sure to have them put whatever they use away and clean up by the end of the period. When they finish, (make sure they have their names on them) have them turn them in to the yellow box on the island counter.

6. Ceramics- Have students use the "pinch method" to create birds and fish. Each student should create at least one of each, but may make as many as 4 or 5 if they want to. Sculptures should not be any bigger than their hand. Remind them that anything thicker than your thumb must be hollow (just like the spheres from the first week). They should be sure to cover them with plastic bags when they're done. Tomorrow we will score/critique last week's pots.

Please be sure they clean-up no later than 1:40pm and please make sure that the lit is put back on the barrel tightly. Friday afternoon when I came in for the basketball game, there were tools and clay on the table and the lid was on the floor- the clay will dry out and be ruined if it is not covered. Please don't let them play cards or play on their phones or ipods. Thank you.

7. 8th Grade Art- Have students take the attached quiz on the elements and principles of design. Students MAY use their notes, students may NOT use their books, students may NOT talk. Please collect the quizzes in the yellow box when they are finished. Students should read the directions on pages 12-13 in their books for the assignment which they will begin tomorrow.

8. Yearbook- 
  • Kari & Shelby- Read "MODULE 1: The Yearbook" (pp.7-11)- test Friday, I will have related activities for them to complete tomorrow or Wednesday.
  • YBII- (Most of the class) Work on their pages, they can design layouts even before they have pictures for them. They receive a weekly "work" grade for their progress.
  • YBIII&IV- (Ashley, Taylor, Robert, & Kameren) Work on Senior Section or help other students with their pages.

Mallory Sub Plans for Fri Jan 18

1. & 2. CIVICS- Have students read/complete questions 1-2 p. 152 and 1-2 p. 158 and turn in by end of the class period. Students should also turn in the research proposal which was due today.

3. Photography- I've run off copies of the chapter 1 quiz. It SHOULD be either on my desk by the coffee maker, or somewhere on the island in the Art room. If you can't find it, you can print new copies from this link: http://digphoto.wikispaces.com/file/view/Photo%20Chapt.%201A.pdf/194670956/Photo%20Chapt.%201A.pdf When students are finished, some of them should use the time to download pictures from their cameras and upload them to flickr, add their assigned pictures to the class group "pool." A few people may need to use the time to register for flickr and others may use it as a studyhall, so long as they're quiet.

I'm okay if a few of them are done and want to use the time as a studyhall, but please don't let them play cards or play on their phones or ipods. Thank you.

7. 8th Grade Art- No class today, if any show up, send them to PE

8. Yearbook- This class also has a test, again, it should be in the same pile with the Photography and Ceramics quizzes. If for some reason, you can't find them, you can have students take the online version at http://www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us/pages/yrbk_ethics.htm  If you need to use the online quiz, students may want to check out laptops because they usually complain about having difficulty logging in to and loading things on the older computers in the adjacent lab. Be sure students enter their names and their email addresses, but no ID number is necessary, when they click submit, it will automatically be mailed to me.

If any cheerleaders ask, I am planning on coming in this afternoon/evening for the game tonight.

PHOTOGRAPHY; Self Portraits 2013

Here are some aspects to consider in your own self-portraits:

1) DESCRIBE SENSORY ELEMENTS; Its a little heavy on the yellows. Plenty of texture from the beard (too close-up?) Overall its bright.

2) ANALYZE FORMAL PRINCIPLES/COMPOSITION; The hoodie frames the face a little. Even though the mouth is big and open, most of the lines still lead your attention up to the eyes- the eye contact with the viewer engages us and holds our attention.

3) INTERPRET THE MEANING/CONTENT; Maybe Mr. Mallory has a rage problem, but there seems like there's a sense of humor, like its not really anger, but fake anger. Even though its funny, it isn't easy to keep looking at it for too long because its like he's invading your personal space, which is uncomfortable.

4) EVALUATE THE TECHNICAL QUALITIES; It seems a little pixelated, the low resolution probably comes from the fact that it was taken with an iPod rather than a camera. Its just a little out of focus too, although that may help the design (#2) and the expression (#3) because it adds to the action/shouting feel.

See how easy providing analysis and feedback can be? it might even be fun for some of you.

7th Grade Art; 4 Phase Portrait

ASSIGNMENT: 7th Graders discussed the different uses/purposes for making art, then they were asked to create a 4-Phase Self-Portrait illustrating each of the four main uses. Commercial art and graphic design communicates directly. Some art emphasizes the manipulation of the elements and principles of design. Much of art centers around creativity and personal expression. And, of course, most of us think that artists are skilled if they are capable of creating something that "looks real."

EXEMPLARS:
  • Utility- corporate logos and trademarks like the McDonald's "golden arches" and the Nike "swoosh."
  • Composition- nonobjective artists like Piet Mondrian, Ellsworth Kelly, or Joseph Elbers and cubists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso
  • Depiction- Realists and Super-Realists from Michellangelo and Rembrant, to Chuck Close and Ralph Goings.
  • Expression- Artists with distinct and emotional styles like August Rodin, Vincent Van Gogh, or Edvard Munch

Tues Jan 8- Ceramics Terms

Expect a quiz either Friday, Jan. 11 or Jan. 18

  • Wedging - A method of kneading clay to make it homogenous by cutting and rolling.
  • ViscosityThe state of being thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency, due to internal friction.
  • Rule of Thumb- Anything thicker than your thumb needs to be hollow, this helps with structural integrity and prevents chemical water
REMINDER- whenever you are absent or miss class, you are responsible for borrowing a classmates' notes, I may not always be able to post them on this website.

Welcome to Digital Photography

Welcome to Boyer Valley's Digital Photography Class with Mr. Mallory.

Over the course of the semester I may email you assignments or reminders of due dates. Much of our class is available online (thus "digital"), if you don't have ready access to the internet at home, you can always use the Yearbook Lab adjacent to the Art Room, or other computers on campus. Once a student even took the entire class, quizzes and all, on their iPhone!

Below are some important links you may need. Robert Willis, who's taking the class Independent Study should be the only one who will need access to the notes slideshow. Everyone else will get those notes on Wed or Thur, Jan 9 or 10.

Digital Photography

Hi Bulldogs-

I'm looking forward to having you in Dig Photo class this semester. There's just a couple of things I'd like to let you know about even before you come to class tomorrow.

First; You REALLY need to have a camera for this class. Unfortunately we just don't have any school cameras that I can loan you. I'm sorry. We just don't have a budget to be able to purchase them.

Most cell phone cameras probably won't cut it either, their resolution is just too low. If you're fortunate enough to have an iPhone or an iPod touch with a built-in camera, you'll be bale to limp along. If you can't borrow or buy a camera withing the next 2-3 weeks, you may want to talk to Mr. Marlin about taking something else 3rd period.

Second; You MUST register for a free membership at flickr.com as soon as possible. Especially because we have such a large class this semester, it may make sense for you to do this from your own computer at home. If you want to, you should be able to join using your gmail account or yahoo account if you already have either one of those. That includes you school gmail account.

Once you're registered, please search for "Mal Dog" and add me as a contact. Then, you may want to visit our class group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/bvdigphoto and see if you can request membership in it. Once you're on flickr and one of my contacts, I'll make sure that I send you an invitation just in case.
