CIVICS; ESSAY DUE MON 12/10

In 250 words or less, explain what Iowa's official state motto means to you. Consider tying it to what we've learned about this semester in Civics.

"Our Liberties we Prize, Our Rights we will Maintain."

You're welcome to email your essays to Mr. Mallory  or share them on google docs if you'd like to write on the computer instead of on paper. Bring your essays to class and be prepared to share them Monday. Bring your books too, because we'll be starting chapter 4 on the Bill of Rights.

  • Monday, December 10 (1948) International Human Rights Day
  • Friday, December 28 (1846) Iowa Statehood Day

Face the Face

Drawing & Seeing Class has been learning about portraiture. Every day after taking notes on general guidelines for placement and proportion of facial features, I assign students to draw several features in their sketchbooks- Last Thursday were four eyes, Monday was four noses, five mouths yesterday, and four ears today. These are from my own sketchbook, which I used a mirror for.

8th Grade ART; American Gothic

After studying about Iowa artist Grant Wood, 8th Graders are creating their own parodies of Wood's 'American Gothic.' Above is mine. This was the cross-curriculum perfect storm. In Civics we are wrapping up our unit on Iowa History and in Art we just learned about the Social Realists and Regionalists.

Mallory Sub Lessons Fri Nov. 30

Thank you (Sub) for taking my classes. One of my daughters is sick today.

1&2hr CIVICS-

Have students read pages 330-334 and answer the section review questions about county government on page 334. Have them turn them into the purple boxes by the end of the hour. Otherwise they can use today to catch-up on any of the Review Question worksheets or notes they may be missing from this past week (blanks are on the counter under the cabinets)

3rd Hr DRAWING-
Students should read pp.162-172 of chapter 9 in their book, then take a look at figure 9-5 on p.166, then trace themselves on a mirror with an overhead marker, then copy or re-trace it into their sketchbooks. They may want to look through the "test for yourself:" diagrams in figures 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4 & 9-5 to help them understand. Afterward, they can use the time to catch-up on whatever real-life sketches of eyes of noses in their sketchbooks that they need to catch up on.

4th Hr- Planning Period

5th Hr 7th Grade Art-

DEAR TIME- 11:52-12:12
Students should continue working on their Complimentary-Color Oil Pastel Self Portraits

6th Hr Painting-
Students should use today to catch-up on & complete their watercolor charts & exercises:
  • Neutralizing Complement Scale Washes
  • 9 Texture Techniques
  • 9 Mood/Emotion Analogues
If they're caught up, they may try one watercolor "free choice painting" or use the time as a study-hall. Please have them start cleaning up at 1:40 pm. If there is ANY trouble, please send students to the office right away.

7th Hr 8th Grade Art-
8th graders have PE on Fridays so enjoy a break!

8th Hr Yearbook-
Students should work on their pages on yearbookavenue.com either in the lab or on a laptop. Or, they may want to explore http://www.fontspace.com since we've been studying typography, but don't download anything, even though its free.

Since it is a Friday home game, there should be a short pep rally today at 3:00pm. Please dismiss cheerleaders at 2:45- ask Jim Jordan when he'd like the band dismissed. If cheerleaders wonder where I'm at, please let them know I'll be there for the game tonight.

Thanks again & have a great weekend.

  • Assignments/Quizzes
    • Module 12 Activity worksheets, Captions reading/notes & Quiz
  • Ad & Book Sales
    • Keep selling ads on your own time, just because we aren't going out together, missing school anymore, doesn't mean you can't keep selling & raise your grade!
    • As of today (11/5) we're only at about 30% of our ad goal. $2,097.00/$7,000.00
    • Start trying to get people to buy books. Sell to teachers & staff, both Dunlap and Dow City (they get $10 off!)
    • REMIND EVERYBODY that the price will go up (from $36 to $42) if they don't order before Christmas break!
    • Can you believe we've only sold 14 pre-orders so far?! Out of almost 500+ people K-12!
You're working hard on this book, don't you want people to see it?
    • Remember too, that we have plenty of 2011-12 books left if people are interested. Often parents & alumni are interested in older books too. We have lots from 2002-2011 for just $25 each.
  • Production work
    • Every week, from now on, I check on how much time everyone spends on yearbookavenue (it keeps track) and how many times you hit "save," not to mention how your pages are coming. It will become a weekly score.
    • Next Monday, we'll go over the rubrics (score sheets) for page production and see what changes/improvements you can make on your Fall assignments. We'll also take a look at the ladder and start assigning Winter pages, so be thinking about what sports, events, or clubs you want to be in charge of.
    • Bob & Paul- we have to send the cover to the plant by or before Friday, November 16!!!

Painting Analysis Paper

http://bv-painting.wikispaces.com/01-+Lists+of+Famous+Painters
Above is a link to the list of influential painters to choose from for our Painting Analysis Paper, which is due Friday, November 2.

This is a link to the directions and template for you to use to help you complete your analysis of one painters.

Remember, if you are in Mrs. Koenig's room for anything and would like to, you may work on this paper in her room this week.

Additionally, you will create a painting that is either a copy or mimics the style of the painter which you are studying. This will be due by (or before) Friday, November 9.

Some of you have mentioned that you would prefer to work on this at home. If you are working at home, please bring something to work on from another class during Painting class 6th hour. Thank You.
Be aware, that if a majority of class members elect to do that, we will probably take notes and introduce a new era in art history and then new painting during class time.

Mallory Sub Lessons Thurs Oct 11

Thank you (Sub) for taking my classes.

1&2hr CIVICS-
  • A number of students need to make-up tests, these are on the teacher's desk in the MS Civics room (with a post-it note on them).
  • Have students read, think about (possibly discuss) and then fill-out the "Declaration Decoded" worksheet )on the teacher's desk in MS Civics room. Make sure that they ALSO, complete the paraphrase on the back of the worksheet. They should work on this during class, but I will collect it in class tomorrow (Friday Oct 12)

3rd Hr DRAWING-
Students should continue working on their chair drawings. When in doubt, they should look over the directions again on pp 127-132 in their textbook. We will decide at the beginning of the hour Friday whether or not we will critique them that day, or give them one last day to work on them and critique them Tuesday.

4th Hr- Planning Period

5th Hr 7th Grade Art-
Students should finish working on their Synthetic Cubism Still-Life. Their drawings and directions should be on the island. One of them should carefully move the still-life cart back to it's original position. A few of them may finish glazing their ceramic projects, but need to clean up afterward. If/when they are finished, they may free-draw, or they should use their time quietly be reading, writing or doing work for other classes. Please remind them that they have the Course Post-Test tomorrow, so they may want to study the notes they took earlier this week.

6th Hr Painting-
Create a Baroque or Romantic-style painting of a person, place, or scene with tempera on paper.
You may choose to...
  1. Create a painting emphasizing the tenebrea style, beginning dark, and using limited, theatrical lighting, like Caravagio or Gentileschi.
  2. Create a painting emphasizing exaggerated mannerism (instead of realistic proportions) to stress tension, action or for expressive or emotional effect, like El Greco or Peter Paul Rubens
  3. Create an allegory, using fictional characters or symbols to express a universal truth, like Rubens
  4. Create a painting depicting a scene from Greek mythology or history, like many Baroque painters.
  5. Create a painting depicting strong or important women in a serious or heroic way, like Gentileschi.

7th Hr 8th Grade Art-
Students should finish working on their non-objective compositions which illustrate the elements of design. These should be on the island. This will be the last day to work on them. Those who are finished need to work on something quietly, free-draw, read, write or do work for another class. Please remind them to bring their books to class on Tuesday.

8th Hr Yearbook-
  • Students should work on designing a one page layout on the blue "Dummy Sheets" on the island. Examples from last year are also on the island. Once designed, they should cut out pictures, headlines or body-copy to paste down as a "mock" layout.
  • When they are finished with the test, they may work on their real layouts or the cover in the lab. Robert & PJ may work on the cover in Photoshop.

Thank you (Sub) for taking my classes.

  • Students will need to each get an 18x24" newsprint pad from the drying cabinet. Today they should at least read the directions on pp 127-132 in their textbook, draw a 2 inch margin on a page in the newsprint pad to create a format and tone the inside of the format with graphite.
  1. Give yourself a 2" margin all around the page
  2. Tone your page with graphite
  3. Choose/use a "basic unit" (see pp.123-126)

Elements & Principles of Design

8th Grade Art students are learning about these in Chapter 1 of their textbook (pages 1-16). Use these graphics to study for your quiz. 7th Grade Art, Painting, Ceramics & Photography students would do well to learn these and use them in their artworks. Even Yearbook students would benefit from knowing the Principles for the sake of designing page layouts. Theoretically, if Drawing & Seeing students are learning their 5 core perceptual skills, these will automatically/intuitively fall into place without learning about them.

About the Principles, remember "Form follows function," and good design should 1) Capture attention 2) Hold attention and 3) Direct Attention and your compositions will have impact and be effective.

The 3 'Okes!

Paintings should try to do this. Great Photos should try to do this too. Probably not a bad goal for writing too.
  1. When you look at an artwork of any kind, what mood do they invoke by how they used the elements?
  2. What things to they evoke for you?
  3. Was it meant to be provocative? If so, how does it challenge you? Does it make you uncomfortable? Why?

Group Pictures

I can't keep track in my head who wants which of these so I'm just sending them all out at once.
  • Band
  • Drill Squad
  • Student Council
Word is that someone's planning on taking a new Volleyball picture Sunday night at Coronation. I need lots of pictures of Coronation & the Jersey Auction anyway-

My In-Laws have a 50th Anniversary thing this weekend that I'm going to, so I can't attend. I've asked Yearbook Students, but over the years they've been notoriously unreliable (even when I make it part of their grade)- so can some of you PLEEEEASE take lots of pictures this weekend.

You can put them in the Archive folder on the server Monday, email them to me, or- and this would be BEST- upload them to www.RePlayIt.com and they go directly to the yearbook! It's fast, easy & free.
THANK YOU ahead of time!

Social Activist Art

8th graders- Juxtapose image(s) & text together in order to make a statement or comment that makes people think- like American artist Barbara Kruger.

Consider what associations you can evoke and/or what thought, discussion or debate you can provoke.

Good Design...

Applies to Photography, Layout, Painting, Drawing, Posters, Logos, Interior Design, Architecture, Landscaping- you name it! Come to think of it- it also applies to good writing. Headline = Right JAB, Lead Paragraph = Left HOOK, Story Body = UPPERCUT.

BLIND CONTOUR LINE DRAWINGS

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS- Before beginning these exercises, be sure to read the directions on pages 89-91 of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (DRSB) and/or page 27 of the DRSB Workbook (handed out Mon. 9/10). Each of these exercises should be in your sketchbook and are worth 10 points each. Please but the time and date next to each one when you finish them.

As a class, we did exercises 1-3 together on Tuesday 9/11 and students did #4 on their own for homework. We will try to do exercises 5-7 in class together on Wed. 9/12

LET IT BE BAD! Don't tear them out of your sketchbook no matter how disappointed you are with any of them. This is about the PROCESS of perceiving and drawing edges- it is NOT about the finished product (of how well you can draw hands). That will come later. Keep these. 1. I need them as evidence of your improving perceptions, 2. you  may want them later in the semester as a point of comparison of how far you've come.

  1. Interior (start from the inside and work out, focus on the lines and creases inside your palm and on your fingers) 5 Minutes (set a kitchen timer if you're working on your own, instead of  together in class).
  2. Exterior (start from the outside and work in, in other words, focus on the outside contour of your hand). Its better to draw slowly and large, its okay if you don't get done- better to have 3 fingers carefully observed for every crack, wrinkle and nuance, than to have a complete hand that's too smooth, too perfect, or too small. 5 Min.
  3. Exterior Left-Handed (This time, use your wrong-hand left for most of us to draw with and use your dominant hand as the model). 5 Min.
  4. Interior/Exterior (go back to using your correct/dominant hand to draw with, but this time start from the inside-out and go on to try to draw the exterior contour too) Don't worry if they don't align. 7 Min
  5. Classmate's Face Left-Handed (Wrong/Left handed) 5 Min.
  6. Classmate's Face Right-Handed (Correct/Right handed) 7-10 Min.
  7. "Modified" Contour Line Drawing of your hand (MCLD) (basically the same as #4, except that you should start from the exterior and this time you MAY look back- though only occasionally, at your sketchbook in order to make adjustments in placement & proportion so that the final product looks more accurate than a purely Blind Contour Line Drawing (BCLD) 7-20 Min

Great Quote in Miss Minsen's Math Rm.

There's an old Latin phrase that fits with this; "diligentia maximum etiam mediocris ingeni subsidium," Diligence is a very great help even to a mediocre intelligence. The way we'd put it in cheerleading is, "You've got to want it, to win it!"

Bonus Questions

Here are 3 extra credit questions for this week's Chapter 18 test:

1. "Ideas shape the course of history" ~ John Maynard Keynes
Explain what you think Keynes' quote means. Give examples.

2. "No society can surely be flourishing and happy of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable." ~Adam Smith

  • Belonging/Love
  • Competence/Power
  • Autonomy/Freedom
  • Learning/Fun
3. Which of the 3 major economic systems do you think would best help the most people meet their basic needs and "inalienable right?" Why? How? Explain.

Meet in groups of four to discuss how to get capital to start a business.

To begin with, you need to prepare a business plan. Your plan should :

1) Describe your product or service and

2) Explain why your product or service is needed,

3) How you plan to make or provide it,

4) How your business will be run or organized
(will it be a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a corporation, a cooperative or a non-profit?)

5) What resources you will need, and

6) how you plan to use the capital.

Write your plan, create a poster with a company logo and/or picture of your product or service, and present your plan to the class. Ask the class if it would finance the business outlined in your plan. Put the names of all your group members on the top of your Business Plan. The best plans will be typed, but are not required to be.
