Art Shows

Like art? Like the Loess Hills? Visit the Cultural Center in Moorhead Iowa and enjoy their "Celebrate the Hills" art exhibit between now and October 28th. Bring your parents & friends.

This show includes oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings by local artists. This year's is one of the biggest shows they've had in years. The participants have captured the spirit of the hills and depict natural landscapes at all times of year.

Start painting, because they have plans to add a youth category next year, so that you'll be able to enter your own artworks in the exhibit.

In the Spring, the Center features a Prose, Poetry & Photography Competition. They'd love to have you visit, and to participate!

Last Spring, Boyer Valley English teacher Kris Johnson helped judge the poetry & photography show and last month, BV Art teacher Ted Mallory adjudicated the 2013 art show. See what he considered prize worthy and cast your own vote for the "people's choice awards."

To learn more about the Moorhead Cultural Center, or to find out how to participate in the upcoming Poetry & Photography show, or next year's Celebrate the Loess Hills art show, call Carolyn Archer at (712) 886-5415 or Phyllis Easton at (712) 886-5114

Painting Choices

COPY of the ARTIST WHO's PAINTING YOU ANALYZED for the formal paper- Due Fri. Nov.9

AGE of REVOLUTIONS PAINTING- Due Wed. Nov.14
Create a painting in either neoclassical or romantic style of a person, place, or scene...
  • A scene out of history, like David, Turner, or Delecroix
  • A local landscape, like Gainsborough or Constable
  • An extremely expressive portrait, like Gericault or Goya
  • A "genre" slice of everyday life, like Chardin or Ingres

THIS TIME, you may choose to work with a different media-
  • Use a thick impasto, like Chardin (be sure to mix plenty of glue in your tempera to prevent cracking & flaking)
  • Use pastels, like Ingres, or
  • Use watercolor, like Turner

Painting Analysis Paper

http://bv-painting.wikispaces.com/01-+Lists+of+Famous+Painters
Above is a link to the list of influential painters to choose from for our Painting Analysis Paper, which is due Friday, November 2.

This is a link to the directions and template for you to use to help you complete your analysis of one painters.

Remember, if you are in Mrs. Koenig's room for anything and would like to, you may work on this paper in her room this week.

Additionally, you will create a painting that is either a copy or mimics the style of the painter which you are studying. This will be due by (or before) Friday, November 9.

Some of you have mentioned that you would prefer to work on this at home. If you are working at home, please bring something to work on from another class during Painting class 6th hour. Thank You.
Be aware, that if a majority of class members elect to do that, we will probably take notes and introduce a new era in art history and then new painting during class time.

Elements & Principles of Design

8th Grade Art students are learning about these in Chapter 1 of their textbook (pages 1-16). Use these graphics to study for your quiz. 7th Grade Art, Painting, Ceramics & Photography students would do well to learn these and use them in their artworks. Even Yearbook students would benefit from knowing the Principles for the sake of designing page layouts. Theoretically, if Drawing & Seeing students are learning their 5 core perceptual skills, these will automatically/intuitively fall into place without learning about them.

About the Principles, remember "Form follows function," and good design should 1) Capture attention 2) Hold attention and 3) Direct Attention and your compositions will have impact and be effective.

The 3 'Okes!

Paintings should try to do this. Great Photos should try to do this too. Probably not a bad goal for writing too.
  1. When you look at an artwork of any kind, what mood do they invoke by how they used the elements?
  2. What things to they evoke for you?
  3. Was it meant to be provocative? If so, how does it challenge you? Does it make you uncomfortable? Why?

Good Design...

Applies to Photography, Layout, Painting, Drawing, Posters, Logos, Interior Design, Architecture, Landscaping- you name it! Come to think of it- it also applies to good writing. Headline = Right JAB, Lead Paragraph = Left HOOK, Story Body = UPPERCUT.

NOTES Taking Forms

I'm excited about these new notes forms I made up today. They should help kids keep track of things that we learn about in my classes. These are based on the Cornell notes taking system which is pretty renown for being very effective. I usually have chapter-specific notes outlines that I use in Civics, but highly motivated and college-bound or TAG students may want to try these as an alternative. Making them available might also be a useful option for when you're absent.

Sub Lessons for last 2 hours Mon. Nov. 7

6th Period Painting- Students should continue working on their Formal Writing Assignments. Please bring 4 or 5 laptops to the Art room that some of them can use. There are 5 computers in the Yearbook lab that work. If they want/need to, James & Jordan may work in Mrs. Koenig's room.

7th Period Yearbook- I will run off the chapter pretest and have it on the island. After the pre-test they may either work on writing headlines and captions on yearbookavenue.com on the 5 computers that work in the Graphics Lab, or they may (quietly) use the time as a study hall and do work for other classes. Christian and Danielle should work on layouts in the lab.
