More Grunt Work; Tag names in yearbook pictures

Here's a Job that EVERYONE on Yearbook staff can work on next week (10/25-10/29)

Tag students in photos at
http://yearbookavenue.jostens.com/yba/flash/imagelibrary.do

I know it can seem like a tedious task, but it's fairly easy and really important.

I've assigned this to everyone at ActionMethodOnline

This is a job you can do from home when you're sick, as long as you have an internet connection. If you're worried about your grades because of quiz scores or lack of book sales- this is a great way to make up for it.

Remember, http://yearbookavenue.jostens.com lets me track how much each staffer has worked, so I can grade you by how many pictures you upload.

I said it before and I'll say it again- this is going to be the best Archive in years because you're one of the best staffs I've ever had.
Thanks!

Keep Selling Ads

Okay, I will back off of having everyone sell 20 ads. So far Austin is the top seller with 12 (even though he got left behind yesterday and couldn't sell). From now on, to get an A, you just have to sell 12 ads.
Click here to see how many you've sold so far.

There won't be any more Canvassing days. Bad weather is coming and the administration won't let me give you anymore days out of school. I was hoping you'd hit Denison really hard yesterday, but we have one ad from Earling, another from Defiance.

Our deadline for Ad Sales is November24- so keep selling every opportunity you have. We're at 84% of our $5K Goal. I know you can make it, don't give up now!

Please try to get people to order a yearbook

Please try to get people to order a yearbooks!

No Touches, Please

If you're reading this on your iPod Touch or iPhone, please put it away. It's new technology, but an age-old problem. Students who play with personal devices in class are distracted, not to mention distracting. Please, it's good manners to leave it in  your pocket, your book bag, locker or at home.

As an Art teacher, I'm completely open to students listening to music on an MP3 player, unless...

  • It's too loud. If it's loud enough that others can hear it when you're ear buds are in- than you're probably doing serious damage to your ears.
  • You're sharing
  • You're scanning- just put it on shuffle and get back to work. If you're spending more time skipping though songs you don't like or trying to find just the right one- there's a problem.
  • You're surfing- believe it or not, I'm a big believer in technology, democracy, freedom, and communication. If you aunt died, you're family needs to let you know. If you forgot to feed the dog, your parents should be able to send you a text to chew you out. Some kids can't check their email or facebook at home- I get that. I'm not here to ruin your life, but when I'm trying to teach you, it is INSANELY RUDE to be searching google for the lyrics of some song you like or checking the price on accessories for your car. And if you're supposed to be working on an Art project, you may be able to work and listen- but you cannot work and watch or search or write at the same time. And you sure can't work or pay attention while you're gaming.
I appreciate that our campus is one big free wifi zone, but please do your personal and recreational use of personal network devices before and after school, between classes or at lunch- not during my class.

Thank you.

No Surfing, Please

Please do not use UltraSurf, or any other means of circumventing the school and AEA's security settings blocking prohibited sites like facebook.

Students in the Graphics Lab should be working on http://yearbookavenue.jostens.com or one of Mr. Mallory's wikispaces.com sites, not listening to music, watching videos, messaging with friends or loitering on social networking sites.

The administration can track the browser histories of every computer on campus if they want to. Do us both a favor and stay on task. Thank You.

YRBK- "Action Method"

https://www.actionmethod.com/Methodology
Mr. Mallory is trying something new to help us get things done.
Action Method Online (AMO) is a simple, free web application that basically lets him create job tickets to let you know what needs to be done for the yearbook.

AMO says that "success comes down to identifying what needs to get done, who needs to do it, and then making it happen."
People often separate "personal" tasks from "professional" tasks (e.g. formal "to-do" lists at work, post-it notes on the refrigerator at home). But Action Steps are Action Steps, regardless of their context. interviewed hundreds of the most productive individuals and teams in the world, and have discovered best practices across industries for managing everyday projects. These best practices have informed the methodology and design of the Action Method.
Hopefully this will prove useful. Regardless, this is an example of the kinds of organization/time-management tools that professional business people use.

Fwd: Mallory Sub Lessons Thurs Oct 14

1. Planning Period

2. Web Programming-
Students should read pages 57-58 in the Dreamweaver book and create a flowchart or site map for their proposed websites, following the directions found on page 58. Students may work ahead on their websites if they'd like to. http://webheads.wikispaces.com/Formal+Writing+Assignment has the all the information they need. They may want to "join" the wiki so that they could start transferring the work they've done already to their page on the wiki. They may also consider downloading and experimenting with KompoZer from http://portableapps.com/apps/development/nvu_portable
No Ultrasurf, no Facebook no Instant Messenger or email.

3. Painting-
This is the LAST day students may work on their large Georgia O'keefe style paintings. Most of them have a lot of work to do. Try to keep Wyatt and Dylan focused. Jimmy is done and may use the time to work on homework from other classes. It's important that they clean up well- no brushes or palates should be left in the sink (Dylan is pretty bad about this).
Students may listen to ipods, but only if they have earphones, only one ipod per student (no sharing) no games and no videos. They should be working more than they are choosing songs.

4. MS Art-
7th graders have PE on Thursdays instead of Art, enjoy the peace and quiet

5. Yearbook-
Lacey, Kayla, Ashley, Taylor and Jacen should use their books and notes to complete the "Quiz 14" and "Quiz 15" worksheets- these are just practice quizzes for the real test which is tomorrow. Once they are finished, they may get on a computer and in their folders withing "\\Server1\archive" they will find pictured to re-touch in Photoshop. They need to correct for red-eye, remove blemishes, adjust contrast levels and color saturation. If they need help on this, Austin should be able to show them what they need to do.
Austin and Christian should be working on layouts on http://yearbookavenue.jostens.com
No Ultrasurf, no Facebook, no Instant Messenger or email- music is okay, but only if they have earphones and spend more time working than choosing songs.

6. Drawing-
This is the final day for working on their chair drawings. THERE ARE ALWAYS MORE THAT CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE. Students should be working all hour- silently. These are done at the end of the hour, we will grade them tomorrow. If they genuinely cannot find more to do to improve their drawings, they should read chapter 8 in their textbook or may draw one of the plants in the windows in their sketchbook, using negative space.
Students may listen to ipods, but only if they have earphones, only one ipod per student (no sharing) no games and no videos. They should be working more than they are choosing songs.

7. MS Cheer-
No practice today, between season break. Thanks for covering me today, have a great afternoon.

Mallory Sub Lesson; Web Programming

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

My doctor's appt. is in Denison at 8 AM. So I should get back before 2nd hour is even over.

Web students should read pages 57-58 in the Dreamweaver Book and create a flow-chart for their Web sites, following the directions on page 58.

Nick and Caitlin may work on Independent Study Drawing & Painting when they're done. All of them may read ahead if they want to.
