Painting Analysis Paper

Above is a link to the list of influential painters to choose from for our Painting Analysis Paper, which is due Friday, November 2.

This is a link to the directions and template for you to use to help you complete your analysis of one painters.

Remember, if you are in Mrs. Koenig's room for anything and would like to, you may work on this paper in her room this week.

Additionally, you will create a painting that is either a copy or mimics the style of the painter which you are studying. This will be due by (or before) Friday, November 9.

Some of you have mentioned that you would prefer to work on this at home. If you are working at home, please bring something to work on from another class during Painting class 6th hour. Thank You.
Be aware, that if a majority of class members elect to do that, we will probably take notes and introduce a new era in art history and then new painting during class time.

What are we DOING this week?

If you are ever sick or absent for another reason, or if you're just trying to be more organized. You can now see what the plans are for Mr. Mallory's classes by visiting his "Planbook."

There you can see this week's plans, as well as look back over the past quarter. Please remember though, that these are tentative and subject to change depending on how much we get through, how the school calendar changes and whether Mr. Mallory is absent too. But most of the time it should be pretty accurate.

For Civics class in particular- Mr. Mallory's Planbook will be a place where you can check to see what homework is do when.

CIVICS- Extra Credit Opportunity

Watch either of the upcoming Presidential debates and simply take notes, and you can turn them in for extra credit! Mr. Mallory will have copies of the notes form in the Civics room, or print off your own by following the "student hand out" link at the bottom of this post.

As part of our extensive campaign coverage, C-SPAN offers viewers a front row seat to each of the presidential debates. C-SPAN coverage of the debates will be livestreamed at c-span.org/campaign2012 as part of C-SPAN’s Debate Hub, where viewers can watch and engage socially.

Mallory Sub Lessons Thurs Oct 11

Thank you (Sub) for taking my classes.

1&2hr CIVICS-
  • A number of students need to make-up tests, these are on the teacher's desk in the MS Civics room (with a post-it note on them).
  • Have students read, think about (possibly discuss) and then fill-out the "Declaration Decoded" worksheet )on the teacher's desk in MS Civics room. Make sure that they ALSO, complete the paraphrase on the back of the worksheet. They should work on this during class, but I will collect it in class tomorrow (Friday Oct 12)

3rd Hr DRAWING-
Students should continue working on their chair drawings. When in doubt, they should look over the directions again on pp 127-132 in their textbook. We will decide at the beginning of the hour Friday whether or not we will critique them that day, or give them one last day to work on them and critique them Tuesday.

4th Hr- Planning Period

5th Hr 7th Grade Art-
Students should finish working on their Synthetic Cubism Still-Life. Their drawings and directions should be on the island. One of them should carefully move the still-life cart back to it's original position. A few of them may finish glazing their ceramic projects, but need to clean up afterward. If/when they are finished, they may free-draw, or they should use their time quietly be reading, writing or doing work for other classes. Please remind them that they have the Course Post-Test tomorrow, so they may want to study the notes they took earlier this week.

6th Hr Painting-
Create a Baroque or Romantic-style painting of a person, place, or scene with tempera on paper.
You may choose to...
  1. Create a painting emphasizing the tenebrea style, beginning dark, and using limited, theatrical lighting, like Caravagio or Gentileschi.
  2. Create a painting emphasizing exaggerated mannerism (instead of realistic proportions) to stress tension, action or for expressive or emotional effect, like El Greco or Peter Paul Rubens
  3. Create an allegory, using fictional characters or symbols to express a universal truth, like Rubens
  4. Create a painting depicting a scene from Greek mythology or history, like many Baroque painters.
  5. Create a painting depicting strong or important women in a serious or heroic way, like Gentileschi.

7th Hr 8th Grade Art-
Students should finish working on their non-objective compositions which illustrate the elements of design. These should be on the island. This will be the last day to work on them. Those who are finished need to work on something quietly, free-draw, read, write or do work for another class. Please remind them to bring their books to class on Tuesday.

8th Hr Yearbook-
  • Students should work on designing a one page layout on the blue "Dummy Sheets" on the island. Examples from last year are also on the island. Once designed, they should cut out pictures, headlines or body-copy to paste down as a "mock" layout.
  • When they are finished with the test, they may work on their real layouts or the cover in the lab. Robert & PJ may work on the cover in Photoshop.

Mallory Sub Lessons Oct 8, 2012

I am going to try to see a doctor tomorrow because I have a really bad case of bronchitis. I will try to call Chad to let him know as soon as I send this email. I'm sorry that there are so many attachments to be run off. 

Thank you (Sub) for taking my classes.

1&2hr CIVICS-
  • Students should write down as much of the second and third paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence as they can remember. (PLEASE BE SURE TO COVER IT ON THE BACK BOARD BEFORE CLASS). See attached sheet.
  • Students may use their books to complete the Chapter 19 "Re-Test" to help their grades. Also attached.
  • Please hand out the Chapter 20 Study Guide, which they should use to prepare for tomorrow's PostTest. Also an attachment.
3rd Hr DRAWING-
  • On 18x24" Newsprint pad, students will draw a large still life of a chair (someone should put the antique chairs up on the island, perhaps also my chair). They will be drawing all hour every day this week. 
  • Students will need to each get an 18x24" newsprint pad from the drying cabinet. Today they should at least read the directions on pp 127-132 in their textbook, draw a 2 inch margin on a page in the newsprint pad to create a format and tone the inside of the format with graphite. 
  1. Give yourself a 2" margin all around the page
  2. Tone your page with graphite
  3. Choose/use a "basic unit" (see pp.123-126)
  4. Start by drawing the negative space around the chair, but...
  5. Fully finished, detailed, shading etc.

4th Hr- Planning Period

Students have an open-note (they MAY use their notes) test on Renaissance painting. They should also complete a self-critique/reflection form on their own renaissance-style painting. Test & Self-Critique forms attached to this email.

Students should continue working on their non-objective compositions which illustrate the elements of design. These should be on the island. Supplies are in the second cabinet from the TV.

8th Hr Yearbook-
  • Students should take the Design 1 Test (attached)- they may use their notes, but not their books
  • Students who need to, should finish their reverse-engineered layouts
  • When they are finished with the test, they may work on their real layouts or the cover in the lab

Mallory Sub Lessons Thurs Oct 4

7th Hr 8th Grade MS Art-
  • Have students turn in their "Check Your Understanding Questions" 1-5 from page 5 which were due today, have them put them in the yellow box on the island. 
  • Students should then read and follow the directions on pages 6 & 7- paper will  be in a stack on the island, markers, crayons and colored pencils are in the second cabinet from the TV. Students should work all hour, but they will be able to work on these non-objective elements-artworks on Monday.
8th Hr Yearbook I & YrBk II-
  • Students should continue working on and try to complete their "reverse-engineered" magazine layouts on their dummy-sheets. Rulers are on the island and scissors & glue are in the second cabinet from the TV.
  • Robert & Taylor (and other students once their done with their layouts) may work in the lab, either building their real page layouts or identifying students in pictures on www.yearbookavenue.jostens.com

Elements & Principles of Design

8th Grade Art students are learning about these in Chapter 1 of their textbook (pages 1-16). Use these graphics to study for your quiz. 7th Grade Art, Painting, Ceramics & Photography students would do well to learn these and use them in their artworks. Even Yearbook students would benefit from knowing the Principles for the sake of designing page layouts. Theoretically, if Drawing & Seeing students are learning their 5 core perceptual skills, these will automatically/intuitively fall into place without learning about them.


About the Principles, remember "Form follows function," and good design should 1) Capture attention 2) Hold attention and 3) Direct Attention and your compositions will have impact and be effective.
